    Hiking: caterpiller

Just a caterpiller on a rock.

    Hiking: geocache

A geocache on the top of Horn Pond mountain. This is the second time I've visited it. Though I use a GPS, I stumbled across it the first time without any help.

    Hiking: Boston skyline

Taken with my cameraphone from the top of Horn Pond mountain (which probably has some other name that I don't know). You have to squint, but the skyline is there.

    Blue sky!!

Finally, it's sunny in the Boston area. I'm not coming inside for a moment. Yes, I'm on my deck as I write this.

    Why movies aren't worth it

Interesting article at the New York Times (via Thomas Hawk's Digital Connection) about why fewer people are going to the movies.

I decided never to go to the movies again about 3 months ago. The wife and I went to see some movie (can't even remember which one). First, we had to plan the whole night around the movie. You have to decide which movie you want to see, figure out which theater is playing it, and then pick a time. If the time is, say, 8pm, you then have to figure out how to get dinner, get the bill paid, and get over to the theater before then.

The earliest we could get to dinner would be about 7:30pm, so getting to an 8pm movie is about impossible. The next time movies start is usually around 9:30pm, which is also poor timing. If there wasn't a wait for a table at the restaurant and the server was quick, we could be out around 8:30, and then have to find a way kill an hour. Which brings us to the first major problem with movies: The schedule isn't flexible.

The second major problem? Other people. There's the guy who doesn't understand the plot and always has to ask the person next to him what's going on (this happened at the last movie we saw, which I know remember to be Hitch--not the most complex movie to follow). Then, there's the guy who repeats every funny line in the movie. And the kid who kicks he back of your seat. And the baby who cries. And the dude who takes a phone call, but whispers, and thinks he's not disturbing anybody. And the person who sits right next to you or right in front of you even though the theater is empty.

Food and drink are the third problem. I'm not even going to complain about the price. I want more options. What if I want a beer or margarita during the movie? Can't do it. Want some Chinese food? Not an option, but I can get you some stale popcorn.

Traffic is the forth problem. Once, I went to see an 8:30 movie at the theater up the street (Burlington). It's a ten minute drive, and I left 45 minutes early. I waited for half-an-hour to take a left turn into the parking lot. I was finally getting close to the light where I could turn, and I realized the movie had already started, and so I just drove away.

So now I only watch DVDs (thank god for Netflix, since I have almost as many complaints about video rental places). When a new movie comes out that I want to see, i add it to my Netflix queue, and wait patiently for it to be released. And no, I haven't seen the third Star Wars movie yet.

Proof that my cat is ugly

I have an ugly cat, but people think I'm just mean for saying that. Well, here's scientific proof:

    http://kittenwar.com/kittens/losers/

His name is Sammy, and he's currently ranked #2 on the ugliest cats list. It hasn't affected his self-esteem. He still thinks pretty highly of himself.

    What do May showers bring?

According to the local news, we have had 4 partially sunny days in May. This is a major downer. Let's hope June is better.
